How to Minimize Moving Stress

Moving is not something we consider a fun activity. It’s a lot of work. It is a source of anxiety for all of us. There are a lot of things to think about. Getting your old place cleaned and ready to go. Preparing your new place to live in. You’re up late at night wide awake thinking of all the things you have to get done. Your pulse quickens as you count down to the day you move. Don’t have a heart attack. Follow these suggestions to get your heart rate down:

Breathe – Think positively. Picture the end result. You’re moved and sitting in your new home, having a cup of coffee and enjoying your new surroundings.

Get enough sleep – We understand if you have children that this is a tall order. Do your best to stick to your regular routine despite the drastic changes happening. This will help the kids transition well too.

Keep your sense of humour – Even though moving is no laughing matter, try to laugh at the stupid things that happen. This will help reduce anxiety.

Develop a moving strategy – Having a plan makes life easier. Take notes on what you have to do. Usually stress comes from forgetting things or forgetting do do something. Use a schedule either on a daily planner or calendar on paper or on your mobile device to write down what needs to be done months, weeks, or days before the move. At the end of each day, review your lists and check off things that have been done. Put your planner next to you on your nightstand and whatever is keeping you up late at night, jot it down so you don’t have to worry about forgetting about it.

Slim down your material possessions – The more stuff you have, the more you worry about them. Things take up too much of our time cleaning and maintaining. Go through your things and ask yourself, have I used this item in the past six months to a year? If not, recycle it or out it goes. You can also ask your friends or neighbours if they need certain items that you’re taking out of your home.

Try to eat well – It’s easy to just go through the drive through at a fast food restaurant under the duress of moving but not eating properly actually will not help you lessen your stress but just adds to it by clogging your arteries. So don’t pack all your dishes yet. If you have camping plates utensils, use those. Plan your meals ahead so you won’t be tempted.

Go for a walk or a run – Despite your busy schedule with moving, try to do at least 15 minutes a day of exercise to help clear your head and relax your body.

Hire us – Let us at Brisk Transport do the heavy lifting for you. Delegating the task to our experienced and professional movers will definitely make your life easier.

Call up friends – We’re sure you’ve helped friends move at one time or another. Now it’s time for them to return the favour. Make sure you have everything packed and ready to go or else you’ll annoy them when they have to pack for you or are waiting for boxes to be taped up. The more help you get, the less work you have to do yourself. Show your gratitude for their by providing meals or snacks for them during the move. Have them over for a barbecue over at your new place.
